Multilingualism in Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Introduction
Multilingualism should be adopted as an approach to teaching, learning and
assessment in countries with strong linguistic diversity such as South Africa. My
position is that this approach is necessary because it improves understanding in
class, supports fair assessment, and affirms the identities and knowledge systems of
learners. When education is shaped only through one dominant language, many
students are placed at a disadvantage from the start. In a country where learners
come to school and university with rich language resources, teaching that ignores
those resources limits participation and weakens academic success. A multilingual
approach offers a more just and effective way of learning.
