1.1.
The language that people speak at home or in their community has a strong
influence on how they understand themselves and how they relate to other people.
The way people greet one another, the words they use in daily conversations and
the tone they choose often show the values that are important in that community. In
many South African communities language is closely linked to respect, identity and
relationships. For instance, greeting elders politely and using respectful forms of
address shows that the community values respect and good manners. Through
everyday conversations children and young people slowly learn how they should
behave and how they should treat others.
Language also helps people understand where they belong in their community.
When people use their home language they often feel a deeper sense of connection
with their culture and the people around them. Their language carries shared
experiences, memories and traditions that have been passed from one generation to
another. In daily conversations people often use stories, proverbs and sayings to
explain situations in life. These expressions reflect the beliefs and attitudes of the
community and guide people in how they should think and act. In this way language
becomes more than a tool for communication. It helps people express their identity,
values and understanding of the world around them (AFL1501 Unit 2).
1.2.
Greeting people when entering a home or meeting someone in public is a common
cultural practice in many communities. Although greeting may look like a simple
action, it carries important cultural meaning. In many African societies, showing
respect to elders through greetings is highly valued. Young people are usually
expected to greet elders first. They often use polite and respectful language when
doing so. This behaviour recognises the position of the elder in the family or
community and helps maintain respect and harmony among people.
Language plays an important role in shaping how this practice is understood. The
words that people choose when greeting others communicate their attitude and their
relationship with the person they are greeting. The tone of the greeting and the
