MLB111 Unit 3: Photosynthesis
Kirsten Woeber

3.1 Photosynthesis
KEY TERMS
Term Definition
Photosystem A protein-pigment complex that absorbs light
energy and thereby sets the photosynthesis
electron transport chain in motion

Reaction centre Specially configured pair of chlorophyll
molecules where light energy is converted into
electron transport

Antenna A chlorophyll molecule that absorbs energy
from sunlight and passes it to another
chlorophyll molecule during photosynthesis

Carotenoid An orange-yellow light-absorbing pigment in the
photosynthetic membrane

3.1 An Overview of Photosynthesis

3.1.1. Trophic organisms
Organisms classified by where get carbon
➔ Organic compound - hydrogen // carbon

1. Autotrophs
Convert inorganic form of carbon to organic form of carbon → make own food
a. Photo-autotrop
i. Take energy from sunlight, convert into molecules
ii. Eg plants, algae, cyanobacteria
b. Chemo-autotropsh
i. Obtain energy from chemical compounds
ii. Ie don't need any sunlight
iii. Eg sulphur-oxidising bacteria, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, iron-oxidising bacteria

2. Heterotroph
a. Obtain carbon from organic molecules synthesised by other organisms
b. Cant make own organic molecules

·
increased survace area for capturing light
·
waxy surface to prevent water loss
