Question 1

1.1 Reaction

a) Hermeneutics and truth

Hermeneutics is generally understood as the philosophy of interpretation. It originally
developed as a method for interpreting religious texts, especially the Bible, but over
time it became an important philosophical approach for understanding meaning in
language, culture and human experience. When hermeneutics is connected to the
idea of truth, it emphasises that truth is not always something fixed or absolute.
Instead, truth often emerges through interpretation and dialogue between people.

From a hermeneutic perspective, truth is discovered when individuals try to
understand the meaning of texts, experiences or events within their specific historical
and cultural contexts. This means that people’s background, language and personal
experiences influence how they interpret knowledge. As a result, different people
may interpret the same information in different ways while still searching for a deeper
understanding of truth.
Philosophers such as Hans-Georg Gadamer argued that truth develops through
what he called a “fusion of horizons”. This means that when people interact with a
text or with other individuals, their perspectives come together and expand their
understanding. Truth therefore becomes something that is shaped through dialogue
and reflection rather than something that simply exists independently of human
interpretation.

In my understanding, hermeneutics encourages people to think critically about
knowledge instead of accepting information without questioning it. It also reminds us
that knowledge is influenced by social and cultural contexts. This approach is
important in modern societies because people come from different backgrounds and
therefore interpret information in different ways.

Hermeneutics therefore helps us understand that truth is not always straightforward.
It requires careful interpretation, open-minded discussion and an awareness that our
own perspectives influence how we understand the world around us.
