Question 1
1.1 Explain the following concepts
a. Citizenship
Citizenship refers to the legal and social status of being a recognised member of a
particular country or political community, which comes with specific rights, privileges,
benefits, duties and responsibilities (Siyakwazi et al., 2018, p. 52). In South Africa's
constitutional democracy, citizenship reflects two distinct formulations: citizenship as a
legal status to be a citizen and citizenship as a practice to act as a citizen (Study Guide,
Unit 6, p. 44). All citizens, including children, are equally entitled to the rights, privileges
and benefits of citizenship, and equally subject to the duties and responsibilities of
citizenship
b. Citizen
A citizen is an individual who is legally recognised as a member of a specific nation or
state, possessing certain rights and obligations (Siyakwazi et al., 2018, p. 52). In a
democracy, citizens have the right to participate in the political process, either directly or
through elected representatives . Citizens are expected to contribute to society as active
and responsible members.
