PLS1501 ASSIGNMENT 1 SEMESTER 1 2026 bmz. Philosophy refers to a universal intellectual activity concerned with critical reflection on fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, morality, and human life. It involves the systematic use of reason, argument, and reflection to understand reality and human experience. By contrast, Western philosophy represents only one historical and cultural tradition within the broader discipline of philosophy. It developed primarily in ancient Greece and later evolved through European intellectual movements such as medieval scholasticism, the Enlightenment, and modern analytic and continental traditions. While Western philosophy has produced influential thinkers and ideas, it does not exhaust the global philosophical landscape. Other philosophical traditions such as African, Chinese, and Indian philosophies have also developed sophisticated systems of thought rooted in their own historical contexts and cultural experiences (Wiredu, 1998).

Question 1

Philosophy refers to a universal intellectual activity concerned with critical reflection
on fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, morality, and human life. It
involves the systematic use of reason, argument, and reflection to understand reality
and human experience. By contrast, Western philosophy represents only one
historical and cultural tradition within the broader discipline of philosophy. It developed
primarily in ancient Greece and later evolved through European intellectual
movements such as medieval scholasticism, the Enlightenment, and modern analytic
and continental traditions. While Western philosophy has produced influential thinkers
and ideas, it does not exhaust the global philosophical landscape. Other philosophical
traditions such as African, Chinese, and Indian philosophies have also developed
sophisticated systems of thought rooted in their own historical contexts and cultural
experiences (Wiredu, 1998).

Failing to distinguish between philosophy in general and Western philosophy creates
several intellectual and educational problems. First, it leads to the mistaken
assumption that Western philosophical traditions represent universal standards of
rationality and truth. When Western philosophy is presented as synonymous with
philosophy itself, other traditions are implicitly treated as secondary or non-
philosophical. This results in what scholars describe as epistemic dominance, where
European concepts, categories, and methods are treated as the only legitimate ways
of engaging in philosophical inquiry (Hountondji, 2002).

Second, this failure reinforces the marginalisation of non-Western intellectual
traditions in academic institutions. In many universities, African philosophy is often
separated from mainstream philosophy curricula and placed within fields such as
cultural studies or indigenous knowledge systems. Such separation can imply that
African thought is cultural or anthropological rather than philosophical, thereby
undermining its intellectual status (Ramose, 2002).

In contexts such as South Africa, the consequences are particularly significant. A
curriculum that equates philosophy with Western philosophy neglects the intellectual
heritage and lived experiences of the majority of the population. This perpetuates
colonial patterns of knowledge production and limits the development of a more
