QUESTION 1
Difference Between the Transmission and Transactional Models of
Communication and Their Application to Gift of the Givers
Transmission Model of Communication
The transmission model of communication is one of the earliest and simplest
communication models. It views communication as a linear process in which a sender
transmits a message through a channel to a receiver. In this model, communication
flows in one direction, and the receiver’s role is mainly to receive and interpret the
message rather than actively participate in shaping it (DeVito, 2019).
The key components of the transmission model include the sender, message,
channel, receiver, and noise. Noise refers to any factor that interferes with the clarity
or effectiveness of the message, such as physical distractions, misunderstandings, or
technological problems (Littlejohn & Foss, 2018).
In an organisational context, the transmission model is commonly used in formal
communication structures where instructions, policies, or announcements must be
communicated clearly and efficiently from management to employees. For example,
management might send an email to staff announcing a new operational policy or
providing instructions for disaster relief coordination. The emphasis in this model is on
accurate message delivery rather than interaction.
However, one limitation of the transmission model is that it does not adequately account
for feedback, interpretation, and the dynamic nature of communication. In modern
organisations, employees and stakeholders are not passive recipients of information;
they often respond, ask questions, and influence communication processes.
Transactional Model of Communication
The transactional model of communication provides a more interactive and dynamic
perspective on communication. Unlike the transmission model, the transactional model
