Assignment 1 Semester 1 2026
Unique number:
Due Date: 13 March 2026
SECTION A: PERSONAL REFLECTION
Introduction
Language is not only a tool for communication but also a process that reflects a person’s
identity, background and relationship with others. The way people speak often changes
depending on the situation and the people they interact with. According to Unit 1.1,
individuals adapt their language to suit different speech situations in order to communicate
effectively and maintain their identity. Context also plays an important role in communication
because the environment and the relationship between speakers influence how language is
used and interpreted (Unit 1.1; Unit 1.3).

According to Unit 1.1, individuals adapt their language to suit different speech

Speech Situation and Environment
A good example from my own experience occurs when I move between speaking
with my friends and speaking with my lecturer at university. When I am with friends,
the environment is relaxed and informal. We usually speak in a mixture of English
and our home languages and we often use simple words, jokes and informal
expressions. The language is friendly and casual because everyone understands
each other and shares similar experiences.
However, when I speak to a lecturer or during a class discussion, my language
changes. I use more formal English, speak more carefully and choose my words
more respectfully. I avoid slang and make sure that my sentences are clear and
organised. This change happens because the academic environment requires
respectful and professional communication.
Reason for the Change in Language
The change in my language occurs because the context and relationship with the
listener are different. Unit 1.1 explains that people adjust their language in order to fit
the speech situation and to interact appropriately with others. When speaking to
friends, the goal is social interaction and comfort, so informal language works well.
When speaking to a lecturer, the goal is learning and academic communication, so a
more formal register is required.
