1. Topic

A Critical Analysis of the Impact of Coloniality on the Rise of HIV/AIDS
in PostIndependent Sub-Saharan Africa and the Proposal of
Decolonial Solutions

1. Introduction

When African countries became independent in the late 1950s and after,
they gained political freedom from colonial rule. However, independence
did not completely remove colonial systems of power, economic control,
and ways of thinking. Many experts believe that even after independence,
some colonial patterns of control continued to influence African societies.

1
.1 Background to the Study

After independence, African countries inherited weak economies, artificial borders, and
underdeveloped healthcare systems. Colonial governments invested minimally in
African health infrastructure and prioritised extractive economies. Post-independence
states struggled with poverty, labour migration systems, urban overcrowding, and
gender inequality, all of which contributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS. While HIV/AIDS is
a global health issue, Sub-Saharan Africa has been disproportionately affected.
