, TUTORIAL NOTES

TUTORIAL 2:
Today’s tutorial focused on three statements that are listed below in tables. The
arguments listed represent arguments posed by the students.

Statement: Rapid population growth is a positive factor for development.
Positive Negative
YES WE CAN BUT HOW?
Growing population = labour force Counter: only if the economy can
supply grows  window of opportunity absorb the added workforce,
(period where young babies have otherwise you’re left with a big group
grown into productive adults, of unemployed people.
dependency ratio = lower)
Creative solutions to scarcity Employment challenge vs employment
challenges opportunities. Rapidly growing labor
Dealing with scarcity leads to force, however there has to productive
innovation and paid employment to compensate
this to avoid problems.
Expanding market for goods and Requires growth of production of
services growth of production (when goods and services
there is more people, there are more
customers  niche markets can
thrive)
Opportunities for productive Neo-Malthusian trap  when you have
investments and stimulate savings population growth, you have …
growth, but if there is no investment
to develop income to surpass
population growth it will stagnate.
Health and education
Environmental degradation  lots of
people take up lots of natural
resources which stimulated climate
change.

 Conclusion: It depends! No right or wrong answer. Why is there population change?
Situational factors!

Statement: If governments must choose in investing in health care or
investing in education, which should they choose?
Health care Education
Higher quantity workforce Higher quality workforce
Reinforcement of existing structures Structural change
Short-term Long-term
You cannot educate people if they are Human capital theory  promote
dead. 6.9 children in 2011 died from economic growth and development,
preventable diseases before they were investing in physical capital is not
5 and able to go to school. Investing in sufficient.
healthcare is more important than
investing in their education.
Most of the decrease in infant Education lead to skills that enhance
mortality is due to technological equality and new production system
