SECTION A
1. Person-Centered Therapy: A Brief Description
Person-centered therapy was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s (Corey, 2021,
Chapter 7). It is a humanistic approach that believes people are basically good and
have the ability to grow and heal themselves. Rogers believed that people have a
natural tendency to move toward becoming their best selves, which he called the
"actualising tendency" (Corey, 2021, p. 172).
The main idea of person-centered therapy is that clients have the ability to understand
and solve their own problems. The therapist does not act like an expert who tells the
client what to do (Corey, 2021, Chapter 7). Instead, the therapist creates a safe and
supportive environment where the client can explore their feelings and thoughts freely.
Key Concepts
Rogers identified three important conditions that the therapist must provide for therapy
to work (Corey, 2021, p. 175-178):
Congruence (Genuineness): The therapist must be real and authentic. They should not
hide behind a professional mask. Their inner feelings should match their outer
expressions (Corey, 2021, p. 176).
