QUESTION 1

1. Tourism governance

Tourism governance means arranging how people and organisations involved in
tourism make decisions, follow policies and take responsibility for their actions.
Government bodies, tourism businesses, workers and local residents need to
coordinate their activities because decisions about a destination usually affect more
than one group (Havenga, 2020, pp. 2–3). In South Africa, this includes cooperation
between different spheres of government and the organisations providing
accommodation, transport and tourism attractions. Accountability and transparency
help stakeholders understand who has made a decision and whether it has been
carried out fairly.

, QUESTION 1

I believe good tourism governance becomes easier to understand when we look at
the people living around a tourism attraction, rather than thinking only about visitors
and business owners. For example, a small accommodation business near Kruger
National Park depends on decent roads, a safe environment and local workers,
which means that community concerns cannot simply be ignored. Stakeholder
participation and responsible tourism development can help keep the destination
attractive while sharing opportunities more fairly (Havenga, 2020, pp. 3–4). Good
governance therefore connects business decisions with the long-term interests of the
whole destination.

QUESTION 2

2.1 Role of the King IV Report in tourism governance

The King IV Report gives tourism organisations a practical governance framework
that encourages governing bodies to lead ethically and make decisions that support
the organisation over time. Tourism businesses have to consider employees, guests,
suppliers and nearby communities because their operations affect many different
people (Havenga, 2020, pp. 11–12). A hotel may earn money from visitors, for
example, but it still has responsibilities concerning staff conditions, its use of
resources and the treatment of people living near the property.
