Unit 16 D1

Introduction: this task I will be producing a report where I will be making suggestions and justifying
ways that the college could improve motivation, I will be using my previous assignment P3 and M2

The importance of improving motivational techniques in the college:

It is very crucial that the college just like other businesses constantly motivate their staff as it is the
key to an organisation's success, it is the level of commitment drive and energy that the colleges
employees bring to the role everyday therefore it is very important that the motivational techniques
of Waltham forest college are constantly improving. Organisations like colleges are very important to
the developing minds of students therefore it is very crucial that colleges are finding new techniques
and ways to develop their staff to keep them in the industry of teaching and motivate them for them
to be able to teach other students to be successful. As any other organisation motivation is key in
having a successful business therefore a positive environment and various job enrichment will help to
solve the problem of a lack of motivation, as well as improving motivation levels.

Colleges current range of motivational techniques and reward systems:

Motivational techniques theories used by the college

 Abraham Maslow
 Fredrick Herzberg
 Fredrick Taylor

Financial methods

 Pay
 Pension scheme
 Free car parking
 Childcare

Personal and social nature methods

 Praise
 Responsibility
 Training & development
 Social relationships

Offer opportunities for self-development

Offering opportunities for self-development will motivate the colleges staff to work harder to reach
their goals as a member of the organisation will be more valuable to the college and themselves
when they have open opportunities to learn new skills, this is very important because in order for an
organisation to succeed they require good quality motivated and hardworking staff in order to keep
staff motivated the college must give something for them to work towards like a promotion to
become a head of department which will lead to them having many benefits. As staff are aware of
the benefits that they may receive they will be more motivated and dedicated to working towards

, these goals. One of the recommendations that I able to make that is different from the existing
provisions that the college has been providing their staff with is the idea of a simulation, this method
is becoming very popular as it gives the opportunity for staff to reflect on their engagement and how
effective they have become. This simulation would consist of a role-play for example a teacher
student interaction, they would be placed in a situation where they are having to deal with an
enraged student therefore, they would be required to show how they would deal in this situation. At
its highest level the simulations can involve how the employee would act as a manager performing
how they may sack an employee; this is very important as the college would be able to see if the
employee is the right fit for the opportunity of promotion to become a manager and if they have the
right skills to perform the requirements of a manager.

I believe that my recommendation will most definitely have a positive impact on the organisation by
providing the staff with the training they need to advance in their careers and to become
knowledgeable about the latest updates they will be sure and comfortable enough knowing that they
have all the requirements to self-develop which will motivate them even more. Some of the
advantages of offering self-development by the college will result in much more motivation for the
employee as they will have all the resources provided to them by the college which will mean that
they will feel like they have a place to be there, also the employees will feel like the college has their
best interest in mind, therefore will motivate them to stay within the organisation as they will feel it
best for their self-development. Another advantage that this method of developing motivation will
have is on the college, the college is an organisation that is constantly looking for employees that will
make sure that they will perform to the best of their ability and will motivate others to do so too.
When the college offers opportunities for self-development employees see that the organisation is
trying hard to keep their employees satisfied and always moving forward therefore staff in exchange,
they will try their best for the organisation that they are working for which is an advantage to the
college and its success. As I have suggested before the idea of a simulation that I believe will have a
positive impact on the organisation because it will allow them to not only provide their staff with
opportunities for self-development, but it will also be more time efficient for the college to not waste
their time on employing the wrong people as the simulations may take time away from the people in
charge of performing them.

However, there are some disadvantages that this method of motivation may have on the college.
Due to the college having a huge number of staff will mean that they will have to provide that
opportunity for self-development for everyone which this consists of training within and outside the
organisation which is expensive as well as takes away time that could be used effectively teaching.
Another disadvantage is the lack of positions that college may have in the head of department
section this may mean that some of the staff that had acquired the same training as offers may not
have the same opportunities as others to move up get the same experience. Another disadvantage is
that training may be very expensive as it requires the right people to perform it this includes the
simulation as well as it is very time consuming therefore will lead to less productivity within the
college.

In conclusion I think that this recommendation should be taken into consideration differently for each
staff member depending on the circumstances like who has been longer at the college and may be
losing that motivation to work harder therefore, I think that the college should use this motivational
technique in some cases to motivate certain individuals that may require it.
