DUE 16 MARCH 2026

QUESTION 1
Read the following excerpt and answer the questions that follow:

The theory of human personhood advocates interdependence, where the term, ‘person’
means that the self has meaning when it is in a relationship with others and the rest of
creation (Klaasen, 2017). This perspective holds that the community makes the person, and
that the person's moral achievement is defined by the ethic that emphasises sensitivity to
the interests and well-being of other members of the community, though not necessarily to
the detriment of individual rights.

1.1 Identify and then, in your own words, discuss the characteristics of
the perspective

1.1 Characteristics of the perspective of a competent human being as

presented in the excerpt

According to Learning Unit 1, a competent human being is a person who has sound

theoretical knowledge, critical judgement, and the discipline to learn and adapt

rapidly to new problems. A competent person also has strong self-knowledge and

self-awareness (IOP2605, Unit 1).

The perspective of a competent human being can be understood from different

theories, especially Jung, Maslow and Frankl.

1. Sound theoretical knowledge

A competent person understands important theories and concepts. This knowledge

helps them make good decisions. They do not act without thinking. They use

knowledge to guide their behaviour (Unit 1).

, 2. Critical judgement

A competent person can think deeply and carefully before making decisions. They

can analyse situations and choose the best solution. They do not react emotionally

without thinking.

3. Ability to learn and adapt

The modern world changes quickly. A competent human being is flexible and willing

to learn new skills. They adapt to new challenges and do not fear change (Unit 1).

4. Self-knowledge and self-awareness

Self-awareness is central to competence. According to Jung’s theory of individuation,

a psychologically healthy person has a high level of self-knowledge (Jung, in Unit 1).

Such a person:

Understands both their strengths and weaknesses

Is aware of conscious and unconscious aspects of themselves

Reflects deeply on their life goals and ambitions

5. Acceptance of self

Jung explains that an individuated person accepts themselves fully, including

weaknesses (Unit 1). They do not hide behind social roles. They understand who

they truly are.

6. Integration and balance

A competent person shows balance in personality. No single attitude dominates.

They are able to integrate different parts of themselves. This creates psychological

health (Jung, Unit 1).
