MULTIPLE CHOICE

Critically discuss the reasons for adopting a new education system in post-
apartheid South Africa
Introduction

The adoption of a new education system in post-apartheid South Africa was
a fundamental necessity rather than a policy choice. Under apartheid,
education was deliberately designed to reinforce racial segregation,
economic inequality, and social exclusion. The education system functioned
as a mechanism of oppression that prepared different racial groups for
unequal roles within society. With the advent of democracy in 1994, the
new government faced the urgent task of dismantling this deeply unequal
system and replacing it with one aligned to constitutional values of equality,
human dignity, and social justice. This essay critically discusses the
reasons for adopting a new education system in post-apartheid South
Africa by examining how apartheid education contributed to inequality, why
transformation was essential, and how the democratic government
attempted to create a more equitable and inclusive education system.
Apartheid education and the creation of inequality
Apartheid education was explicitly structured to privilege white learners
while systematically disadvantaging Black African, Coloured, and Indian
learners. The Bantu Education Act of 1953 institutionalised racially
segregated schooling and ensured that Black learners received an inferior
curriculum designed to prepare them for manual labour and subservient
roles. Schools serving Black communities were severely underfunded,
overcrowded, and poorly resourced, with inadequately trained teachers and
limited access to textbooks and infrastructure. In contrast, white schools
received disproportionate funding, superior facilities, and a curriculum that
promoted critical thinking and leadership skills.
Language policy further deepened inequality, as African learners were often
forced to learn in Afrikaans or English, languages that were not their mother
