RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND POWER IN SOUTH AFRICAN
EDUCATION.
Introduction
Language has always been deeply connected to power, identity and control in South
African education. During apartheid, language was used deliberately as a political
tool to maintain racial domination and limit the intellectual development of black
learners. Schools were organised in a way that privileged English and Afrikaans
while marginalising African languages, even though the majority of learners spoke
these languages at home. As a result, language became a major barrier to
meaningful learning and academic success. Christie (1991) explains that apartheid
education was designed to restrict access to knowledge rather than expand it, and
language played a central role in this process.
In the post-1994 period, South Africa committed itself to transforming education to
promote equality, inclusion and social justice. The Constitution recognises eleven
official languages, and education policy emphasises multilingualism and mother-
tongue instruction, especially in the early years of schooling. However, despite
progressive policies, language inequality remains deeply embedded in the education
system. English continues to dominate as the language of teaching, assessment and
economic opportunity, reinforcing historical power relations (Balfour 2015).
This essay critically discusses the relationship between language and power in
South African education. It explores how language affects learning outcomes,
access to quality education, and broader issues of inequality and transformation
within the post-apartheid education system.
How language affects learning outcomes

do not speak at home, their ability to engage meaningfully with learning material is
