SOUND CLASS 8
Sound originates from mechanical vibrations. It is a longitudinal wave, meaning the particles of the medium oscillate back and forth in the same direction that the wave travels. This creates a series of compressions (high-pressure zones) and rarefactions (low-pressure zones). Because sound relies on particle collisions, it is a mechanical wave and strictly requires a material medium; it cannot propagate through a vacuum.
