a) The value of using authen c materials in foreign language teaching:
When teaching more advanced English learners, it is very useful to incorporate materials that will
resonate with them. This can be done by utilising materials that are purposeful and useful to ensure
students are engaged. Authentic teaching materials provide real-life illustrations of the language
used in everyday situations, which can be utilised to add more interest for the learner. Authentic
materials can provide information about the target culture and provide that specific culture’s
perspective on an issue or event. Essentially it reflects a kind of situation that students may face in
an English-speaking environment. Authentic materials provide a great source of input language
learners need for successful language acquisition, as well as motivating students when they can
conquer a ‘real text’. Using authentic texts is not only valuable for the students, but for English
teachers too. This is due to authentic texts serving as a great time-saving tool for teachers when
preparing lesson materials as there is no need for them to design their own materials from scratch.

When teaching advanced English learners, teachers need to use relevant materials to ensure that
learners are engaged and interested. I have chosen this particular text as Covid-19 is a global
pandemic, affecting people from all over the world. This material is something that all students will
be able to relate to, so it is perfect for a mixed group of advanced learners. This reading text will
allow students to improve their reading skills, as well as enlighten themselves even further on the
effects that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused, allowing them to feel more confident speaking
about this topic should it arise at work. The 12 vocabulary items that I have chosen from the text
have been graded to match the language level of the students, which is advanced. Students will be
