Assignment 2

Due 12 February 2026

QUESTION 1

1.1 Define the concept of assessment in your own words. (2 marks)

Assessment is the process of observing, collecting and recording information about
learners to understand their development, learning progress and needs. It helps the
teacher to plan suitable teaching activities and support each learner effectively.

1.2 Explain the difference between formal and informal assessment in Grade R. (5
marks)

Formal assessment is planned, structured and recorded. It is done at specific times and
uses set tools such as checklists, rubrics or assessment tasks. The results are written
down and used for reporting on learner progress.
Example: An assessment checklist to record whether a learner can recognise colours,
shapes or write their name.

Informal assessment happens naturally during daily classroom activities. It is ongoing
and flexible. The teacher observes learners while they play, talk, draw or work in
groups. It is not always written down immediately but helps the teacher understand
learners’ needs.
Example: Observing a learner during free play to see if they can share toys or follow
instructions.
