,Anticipated difficulties: Suggested solutions:
1. Spanish words never start with an “s” sound, and words 1. Spanish speakers have no problem producing a hissing sound,
which are similar to English tend to have an initial “es” so the secret is to have them make the word directly after
sound instead, as in escuela/school that “ssss” and then practise reducing the length of that
down to a short initial “s”.
2. Adding the schwa /ә/ behind the consonant clusters and 2. Repetition of words and practical exercise. Demonstrate all
making the English words match the Spanish number of this while making the appropriate sounds. Invite students to
syllables. participate in the exercise. Incorporate facial exercise and
show how to make certain sounds with the mouth, lips,
teeth, palate and nose.
3. Perhaps the single biggest pronunciation problem for 3. bit/beat; not/note and not/naught; batter/barter; pull/pool
Spanish speakers is that their language does not have a
distinction between short and long vowels. As the pairs above are all pronounced with different mouth
positions as well as different lengths, focusing on that can
help students distinguish between the minimal pairs above
even if they don’t fully get the hang of vowel length.
