Syllabus Type: Skills and Topic based
Skills based: The student will be introduced to activities where listening, speaking (in particular
pronunciation) and writing if of importance by using words that is work environment related. This
will give the student confidence when i.e.: he attend an interview or apply for a job in an English
speaking country.
Topic bases: The student will be drawn into the target language by the use of activities that capture
his interest such as authentic pieces on i.e.: engineering that is workplace related. Certain
vocabulary can be extracted from the authentic piece as a means of expanding the thought
processes with the use of flash cards and word pronunciation. Teacher and student can also have a
casual conversation (find common ground) about the topic of the day and why they find it
interesting.

By the end of the course, the student will be better able to…
• Communicate in a professional manner.
• Show confidence when speaking in the English language.
• Pronounce words fluently, correct and in context.
• Listen and understand English whether it is audio, film, music or normal speech.
• Apply for a higher work position with his current employer.

To have a more effective language “footprint” the decision was made to split the lesson
into two sections, namely: A) a skills based and B) a topic based syllabus.
A) Skills based: By practicing one or all of the four main skills, listening, reading,
speaking and writing, the student will be able to better decode the English language,
build an arsenal of vocabulary and will be able to construct sentences in a logical
way by means of reasoning. The focus area will predominantly be listening,
speaking - pronunciation and writing. By elevating his pronunciation, speaking and
writing skills, the student will be able to have effective, constructive and logical
communication abilities. Pushing his language proficiency levels a notch upwards.
These skills will come in handy in the student’s normal working environment i.e.
report writing or if and when the student applies or goes for a job interview.
