, AIS2601 JAN / FEB SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATION
DUE DATE: 23 JANUARY 2026 (16:00PM)
SECTION A:
QUESTION 1
1.1 Parts of a book which concern cataloguing (15 marks)
Title page
The title page is the most important source of information for cataloguing. It provides
the chief source of data such as the full title, subtitle, statement of responsibility
(authors, editors), edition statement and sometimes the publisher. AACR2R requires
cataloguers to take most bibliographic details directly from the title page to ensure
accuracy and consistency.
Verso of the title page (copyright page)
The verso, found at the back of the title page, supplies essential publication details
that may not appear on the title page. This includes the copyright date, edition or
impression, ISBN, publisher’s address, and sometimes cataloguing-in-publication
(CIP) data, all of which are crucial for compiling a complete bibliographic record.
Cover and spine
The cover and spine help the cataloguer verify the title, author and sometimes the
series title. Although information from these sources is considered supplementary
under AACR2R, it is useful when the title page is missing or unclear and assists in
confirming consistency across the book.
Preface, foreword and introduction
