Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
In evaluating the course book given, I felt that the material was very thorough and well
suited for the advanced students. The course book material started off easier and
progressed to more difficult in a manner which made sense. I also felt that the contents of
the lesson were well organized and had a good balance of each of the four skills; reading,
writing, listening and speaking. The topic of the course material “Urbanization and
Language” also would appeal to most, if not all of the students and no doubt they could
relate to it, thereby keeping them engaged in the activities especially since it focused on
students’ own personal knowledge and their lives. Doing this, I believe that would make it
easier for students to be involved, excited and more apt to focus on the task at hand.
With the myriad of activities in the course, students would be able to revise, reinforce and
practice the new vocabulary with each other in the group work. Although I felt that the
course content is very well laid out, I do believe it to be somewhat cluttered looking and
might possibly look a little daunting and overwhelming to some of the students. Also, even
though it does focus on all four skills, it is somewhat lacking in the pronunciation
development area as there are so many group and individual activities making it somewhat
difficult for the teacher to assess for any difficulties students may be having, as the teacher
is supervising and not necessarily engaging with the students during these activities.
I also feel the course content lacks further testing for the students as well as a lesson
procedure, answers and additional teaching resources. Teachers would have to do these
parts themselves.
That being said, I believe the course content to be appropriate for the advanced level
students and would in no way be offensive or inappropriate to any particular culture,
background or religious beliefs. It is hard to know if the course book would be affordable to
all not knowing the students’ backgrounds and individual financial situations. Despite the
very few limitations of the course book, I would be more than happy to have this material
as part of my teaching curriculum.
