1- DEVELOPMENT OF THE SELF IN SOCIETY
1. Strategies to develop self-awareness, self-esteem and self-development
SELF-AWARENESS = You know yourself
e.g. you know your:
• Interests (Computers, reading books)
• Skills (Emailing my friends)
• Likes and dislikes (Like being with friends, do not like crime)
• Strengths and weaknesses (Strong in mathematics, weak in reading)
• Goals, wishes and hopes (Passing Grade 10)
• Values and beliefs (Values honesty, fairness and respect)


SELF-ESTEEM = How much you like yourself (how you feel about yourself)
Refers to:

• How much you like, rate and value yourself
• How confident you are and how much you believe in yourself

EXAMPLES of high self-esteem:

✓ Jabu likes, accepts and believes in himself
✓ Jabu usually feels confident
✓ Jabu knows what his strengths are and works at becoming even stronger
✓ Jabu works hard at improving his weaknesses


SELF-DEVELOPMENT = How you improve yourself
So how you:

• Build on your strengths
• Improve on your weaknesses
• Develop your life skills
• Become the best person you can be

EXAMPLES of self-development:
Jabu knows he needs to improve his time-management, so he now

Factors that influence self-awareness and self-esteem
Many things affect the way in which you see yourself and how much you like yourself.
These factors include:
• What other people say about you
• What happens in your life
• How well you cope with the difficult things in your life
• Your responses/reaction to your successes and failures
• How popular you think you are
• How your family/friends/important people in your life treat you (will build your self-esteem (SE)
when they praise you or break down your SE when they say bad things to you)
NB: The media (newspapers, magazines, TV, social media etc.) has a huge effect on your SE for example:
You feel bad about yourself when you don’t have the perfect body/face you see on the media.


Strategies to build confidence in yourself and others
You can improve your self-esteem using these strategies:

1. Communication skills
• Express yourself clearly so that others don’t misunderstand you or get the wrong idea so make
sure your message is fully heard.

2. Be assertive
• Know what you want
• Be polite and respectful, but sure of yourself
• Say what you want to say clearly
• State your viewpoint and what you need – make sure people fully understand, they must not
doubt
• Stand as tall and straight as you can and speak for yourself
• Remember to add PLEASE and THANK YOU

3. Speak in public
• The more you speak in front of others, the easier it gets.

PREPARE YOUR TALK DURING THE TALK
- Write out what you want to say - Breathe in and out deeply to calm
yourself
- Write the key words on a card. Take a - Look at the audience, smile and start
quick look to remind yourself of main your talk
points.
- Keep to the time limit - Speak slowly, loudly and clearly


4. Complete your tasks and project successfully
• Manage your time, make deadlines and finish what you start
• Persevere (keep trying until you complete your tasks)

5. Participate in community organisations or life
• Volunteer: The more you help others, the better you will feel about yourself
• Take part in events in your community: Have hobbies and interests, talk to people or become a
youth leader
• Play sport
• Register to vote

6. Make good decisions
• Evaluate your situation and think about what the decision means to you.
• Get info about the different options or choices you have.
• Carefully think about the consequences of each decision
• Decide what would be the most informed and responsible decision. Choose that.
• Act on your decision!

7. Affirm others
• This means to support, encourage and to give praise.
• Help others to become more confident – praise instead of putting them down
• Let them see respect instead of disrespect
• Show you care for others
• Appreciate the important people in your life. Tell them you value them
• Thank them and give honest praise when they deserve it
