It’s obvious that people sometimes lie, and sometimes they lie to the police. The police do all they can, of course, to detect this deception, but actually most people (including the police) aren’t very skilled in making this determination. This is one of the reasons that police investigations often make use of a device called the “polygraph,” or, as it’s commonly called, the “lie detector.”
