- Weldoen, of het bevorderen van welzijn
- Niet schaden
- Rechtvaardigheid
- Respect voor autonomie

• Consequentialistische theorieën gaan ervan uit dat morele handelingen gebaseerd zijn op, en verbonden zijn aan de gevolgen (de consequenties, consequentialisme) die zij hebben.
• Zijn de gevolgen minstens even goed als de gevolgen van andere mogelijke handelingen, dan is het handelen moreel juist.
• Consequentialistische theorieën stellen een nastrevenswaardig doel voorop. Wat het bereiken van dat doel het meest bevordert, is moreel juist. De gevolgen van de handeling zijn dus van belang voor de rechtvaardiging van de keuzes die gemaakt worden en het handelen (of het niet handelen) dat daaruit voortvloeit. Er zijn verschillen in het doel dat wordt vooropgesteld en de wijze waarop dit doel kan worden bereikt. Dit roept een aantal vragen en bedenkingen op.

• Deontologische theorieën stellen een norm voorop.
• Het is belangrijk om te weten wat de norm is die het menselijk handelen leidt, om te kunnen afleiden welk handelen goed is.
• Volgens de Duitse filosoof Kant bijvoorbeeld is een handeling alleen moreel goed als ze verricht wordt uit plicht, uit respect voor wat de zedenwet voorschrijft. Volgens de deontologische theorieën is de handeling op zichzelf van belang voor de rechtvaardiging van een keuze of een handeling, en niet omdat er een bepaald doel mee te bereiken is. De aard van de handeling staat centraal.
