- systems of record: data eerst ingeschreven, elk feit 1x, indien conflixt tussen system of record en ander systeem, bevat system of record de juiste informatie
- derived data systems: resultaat van data uit een ander systeem. Als je deze data verliest, kan het terug uit de originele data worden gehaald. Dit is nodig voor goede read-queries

* Veel applicaties draaien rond geld, ondersteunen commerciële transacties. Nood aan een datastore, maar nood aan meer dan enkel commercieel (reacties op berichten, spelletjes, ...). Omdat apps interactief zijn, gebruiken ze het access patroon OLTP = Online Transaction Processing
* Nood aan data analyses (vaak paar kolommen nodig: wie kocht wat, hoe duur). De query's geschreven door business analisten = OLAP (Online Analytics Processing)
--> business intelligence: resultaten kunnen management helpen met nemen bepaalde beslissingen
Vroeger werden dezelfde DB gebruikt voor OLTP en OLAP, nu OLAP niet meer toegelaten op OLTP datastores, wel op data warehouse
