Light Aircraft Power plant and Engine Requirements EXAM COMPLETE QUESTIONS AND CORRECT DETAILED ANSWERS (VERIFIED ANSWERS) |ALREADY GRADED A+||BRAND NEW VERSION!! Thrust Propulsion - Answer- Methods of generating thrust by increasing the velocity of a flow of air in a direction opposite to the proposed travel of the vehicle. Propeller - Answer- Produces a moderate increase in velocity for a relatively large mass of air. Jet Engine - Answer- Produces a much higher increase in velocity for a smaller mass of air. Rocket - Answer- Produces an enormous increase in velocity for a small quantity of gas. Engine Efficiency - Answer- The performance of the aircraft increases if the specific weight of an engine is decreased. Reciprocating Engines - Answer- Produce approximately 1 HP for each pound of weight. Specific Fuel Consumption - Answer- The fuel flow divided by brake horsepower for reciprocating engines. Durability - Answer- The amount of engine life obtained while maintaining the desired reliability. Reliability - Answer- Continued reliability is determined by maintenance, overhaul, and operating personnel. Operating Flexibility - Answer- The ability of an engine to run smoothly and give desired performance at all speeds from idling to full-power. Compactness - Answer- The shape and size of the engine must be compact to effect proper streamlining and balancing of an aircraft. Piston Engine - Answer- The usual choice for aircraft whose cruising speeds will not exceed 250 MPH, chosen for its excellent efficiency. Types of Reciprocating Engines - Answer- Includes In-Line (straight), V-type, Radial, Rotary, and Opposed. In-Line Engines - Answer- Generally has an even number of cylinders, liquid or air cooled, and has only one crankshaft. V-Type Engines - Answer- Cylinders are arranged in two in-line banks generally set 30-60° apart. Radial Engines - Answer- Consists of a row, or rows, of cylinders arranged radially about a center crankcase. Rotary-Radial Engines - Answer- Known for torque and gyro effect that made aircraft difficult to control. O-Type Engines - Answer- Two banks of cylinders opposite each other with a crankshaft in the center. Basic Parts of Piston Engine - Answer- Includes Crankcase, Cylinders, Pistons, Connecting rods, Valves, Valve-operating mechanism, Crankshaft, Head, and Spark plugs. Crankcase - Answer- Foundation of the engine, containing the bearings in which the crankshaft revolves. Crankshaft - Answer- Transforms the reciprocating motion of the piston and connecting rod into rotary motion for the propeller. Connecting Rods - Answer- Link which transmits forces between the piston and the crankshaft. Pistons - Answer- Acts as a moving wall within the combustion chamber, drawing in fuel/air mixture and compressing the charge. Cylinders - Answer- The portion of the engine in which the power is developed, providing a combustion chamber. Valves - Answer- Fuel/air mixture enters the cylinders through the intake valve and burned gases are expelled through the exhaust valve. Camshaft - Answer- Operates the valve-operating mechanism and is driven by a gear that mates with another gear attached to the crankshaft.
