Becoming a Change Agent
- answer-Businesses rarely succeed with sustainable transformation initiatives
unless they are led from the top.
Understanding the scope of the task at hand and creating a model to measure the
effectiveness of the change are key.
Becoming a Leader
- answer-Leaders should always endeavor to train their staffs to become good
leaders.
An effective leader needs to manage time effectively and feel comfortable sharing
power and authority with staff through delegation.
Effective leadership skills are not necessarily second nature. Rather, as a
supervisor, you must learn them and put them into practice.
,Wanting to be a leader and believing that you can lead are only the starting points
on the path to effective leadership.
Budgeting
- answer-A budget is a financial plan. The budget projects income and expenses for
a period of time. Once adopted or approved, the budget is compared against actual
income and expenses at regular intervals.
The departments are expected to monitor their expenses and track them against any
outside income or revenue they might generate.
Security and most of the service departments of a healthcare organization do not
produce revenue (or enough revenue to offset the total costs of the department) and
are classified as cost centers.
Budgeting Methods
- answer-The traditional method is for the organization to estimate the next year's
percentage of profit or loss and then to simply increase (or decrease) each
department's operating budget by that percentage.
This method allows for relatively easy budget preparation and approval, but does
not allow for any true growth or recognition of services.
Most organizations have moved to zero-based budgeting.
Each proposed budgeted account returns to a zero amount and all requested funds
must be justified every budget year.
Requires documentation to support the requested amounts for salaries, equipment,
supplies, and training costs.
Good documentation and presentation of the requested items for the budget often
lead to success. Often, failure to do either leads to a reduced budget and lack of
support from management.
Capital and Operational Budgets
- answer-Capital budgets are usually reserved for major purchases of equipment or
systems.
, Within the operational budget, different types of expenses are budgeted in separate
line items or accounts.
I.E. salaries, training, regular expenses.
The period usually covered by a budget is called the fiscal year (FY).
Start at the beginning of a month selected by the organization, cover a 12-month
period.
Chain of Command
- answer-The chain of command is often described as an unbroken line of
authority.
The empowerment model is characterized by a moving away from rigid
management authority, toward open decision making.
Supervisors who exhibit delegation, team development, and self-management
skills are the most successful.
The span of control is invaluable to a supervisor, as decisions are best made by
those closest to the action.
Separates employees into levels.
A situation can break down if you take on more authority and control than you
have been given.
Change, Challenge & Opportunities
- answer-As a supervisor, your actions can result in liability to the organization and
to you personally.
Experiences play a major role in becoming an effective supervisor.
Supervision requires good judgment and the ability to not over-react or under-
react.
A healthcare facility is characterized by a rapidly changing environment.
Regulation of the healthcare industry, ongoing managed care mandates,
restructuring of healthcare organizations, impact of technology, and ongoing social
and ethical factors.
