Unit V-B Urinary and bowel elimination Urinary Elimination: 1) Anuria- failure of the kidneys to produce urine, resulting in a total lack of urination or output of less than 100mL/day for adults 2) Bladder scan- ultrasound device measures the bladder urine volume noninvasively, used to measure Post void residue (PVR) the amount or urine remaining following evacuation 3) Catheter care - designed to prevent infection (UTI); includes encouraging large amounts of fluid intake, accurately recording fluid intake and output, changing the retention catheter and tubing, maintaining the patency of the drainages system, preventing contamination of the drainage system, and teaching these measures to the client 4) Condom catheter- catheter rolled onto the outside of the penis, like a condom, attaches to urinary drainage bag 5) Dysuria- voiding that is painful or difficult 6) Enuresis- bed wetting; involuntary urination in children beyond age bladder control is normally acquired ( 4 or 5) 7) Functional incontinence- urinary tract is functional but other illness or disability causes incontinence, i.e. leg injury preventing getting to toilet 8) Hematuria- blood in urine 9) Indwelling urinary catheter- catheter inserted into the bladder through the urethra. Has an inflatable bulb to hold the catheter in place ( double lumen / Foley) 10) Kegel exercise- Pelvic floor muscle exercise, can reduce or eliminate incontinence, tighten and release perineal muscle (identify by tightening anal sphincter)
