During the dictatorship of Salazar, only one kind of family was
acceptable. There was always a wedding in a church between a man
and a woman who then had, on average, three children.
In those days, it was very rare for married people to separate.
Nowadays, those who choose to marry typically do so in a civil ceremony.
However, it is probable that over half of these unions will end in
divorce.
One-parent families have become the new normal, while the number of
childless couples continues to increase. The legalisation of same-sex
marriages shows how the Portuguese have been adapting to modern
values.
