ACC2018S - 2018
Corporate Governance I
Guide for Required(s):
This document will set out how to write out an answer and what is meant by various terms included in
your test and exam required(s):

General advice for writing an answer
In general an answer in any of the Corporate Governance courses, including CGI, you will need to use full
sentences to be awarded marks.

We recommend that your answers use bullet points. The use of bullet points will ensure that you avoid
writing long paragraphs for one mark. Generally each bullet point you write should try to aim for a
separate mark.

Content specific structure for writing out an answer:
 For corporate governance questions: each answer would need to state the principle (P) and
application (A). NOTE: that in CGI “corporate governance” refers to King IV only
For example
P: The board should appoint a company secretary
A: There is no company secretary in place as the previous one has resigned and there has been
no replacement appointment made

ALSO NOTE: that there can be more than one application for a principle
In this case you need not write out the principle twice but can provide both application with the
principle as follows:
P: All members of the audit committee should be independent non-executive members of the
board
A: The CEO, who is an executive director, is a member of the committee
A: The Human Resources director, who is an executive director, is a member of the committee

 Risks: each answer when asked to provide risks should include the negative objective and factor
from scenario. For example
The rental income of WebWatch may be overstated as customers pay upfront for a contract.

 Controls: each answer when asked to provide controls should include who is performing the
control, what they are doing and why/ to achieve what objective. For example
The sales staff should immediately repeat the order back to the customer to ensure the correct
order is recorded.
