“WE, THE PURPLE” EXHIBITION REVIEW

We, The Purple is a multi-disciplinary art exhibition at the Javett Art Centre at the
University of Pretoria (Pretoria, South Africa). Curated by Khumo Sebambo, it marks 30
years of South African democracy. The show’s title and motif draw on Pretoria’s
“Jacaranda City” nickname and the 1989 “purple rain” anti-apartheid protests. It features
works by eminent artists such as Gerard Sekoto, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi, Marlene
Dumas, Athi-Patra Ruga, George Pemba, Bonnie Ntshalintshali and Zanele Muholi
presented across themed galleries. Formal aspects are diverse: bold paintings and
assemblages hang alongside sculpture including a rare Noria Mabasa piece and
photography. The color purple recurs throughout (echoing jacarandas and female
protest), unifying the experience. The layout uses immersive design,, for example, a
“Living School” space invites visitors to sit, read, and even create mini-zines reflecting
on democracy.
