The University of New Mexico Hospital is an extensive public teaching
hospital that provides a wide range of health care services. As New
Mexico's only level 1 trauma center, it offers the highest level of care for
the most critical and complex medical cases in the region. University of
New Mexico Hospital provides the following types of care:
Emergency and Trauma Care
❖ Level 1 Trauma Center- The highest level of trauma care, equipped
to handle the most severe and complex injuries.
❖ 24/7. Emergency Expertise- The emergency team manages a
wide range of critical cases.
❖ Lifeguard Air Emergency Services- Air transport for rapid patient
transfer.
❖ Emergency Department Triage Liaison Service- Dedicated
support within the emergency department.
❖ Psychiatric Emergency Services- Specialized care for mental health
crisis.
There is also an extensive list of specialized medical services provided by
UNMH including cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, oncology,
neurosciences, orthopedics and sports medicine, pediatrics, woman's
health, behavioral health, transplant services, burn care, bariatric surgery,
digestive health, endocrinology. Diabetes and nutrition, ear nose and throat,
urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, dermatology, allergy and
immunology, infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS care, rheumatology,
pulmonary and critical care, nephrology, hematology and blood disorders,
geriatrics, palliative care, and integrative medicine.

❖ The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) of 1996:
, HIPAA is a federal law that sets national standards for the privacy and
security of protected health information (PHI). This includes any
individually identifiable health information that is created, received, used,
or maintained by a covered entity (In this case, UNMH).
UNMH has a dedicated HSC Privacy\ HIPAA Office that develops and
implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with HIPAA.
❖ EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act):
The EMTALA Act requires hospitals that participate in Medicare to
provide emergency medical treatment to anyone seeking help, regardless of
their ability to pay, their legal status, or citizenship. UNMH'S emergency
department must comply with these regulations.
