, ENG2614 2025: Assignment 3 2025

Unique number: 253476

Due date: 26 August 2025 at 23:00

SECTION 1 – Essay Preparation

Read the poem, “Stereotypes”, written by Paulette Martinez, and available from
this website link: https://hellopoetry.com/poem/1495420/stereotypes/

In a paragraph of no more th- What is the theme of this poem? How is the theme
developed?

What metaphors are used in the poem?

Which stereotype is illustrated in the poem?

What other literary elements are used to illustrate the stereotype?

What feelings are expressed in the poem? Use or quote examples, from the poem
to illustrate how these feelings are conveyed.

What do we learn about stereotypes and their effects on people through this
poem?an 500 words, reflect on the following questions:

The poem Stereotypes by Paulette Martinez talks about how people can be hurt by the
wrong things others believe about them. The theme of the poem is stereotyping, which
means judging someone based on things like their skin colour, name, or where they
come from. The poet shows how painful it is when people assume she is not important
or smart just because she is Mexican. She says people often ask her if her dad mows
lawns and if she has legal papers. These questions make her feel very sad and angry.
This shows how literature helps us understand other people’s feelings and experiences,
just like the ENG2614 study guide says (ENG2614/501/0/2020, Unit 1).
