SEMESTER 2
ASSIGNMENT 1
QUESTION 1
Work values describe the manner in which the police should perform their
functions.
Describe seven (7) different broad types of values.
[15 marks]
1. Moral Values
Moral values guide what is considered right or wrong in society. For police
officers, this includes acting with integrity, honesty, and fairness in all situations.
Upholding moral values ensures public trust and ethical law enforcement,
especially in situations where officers must use discretion.
2. Legal Values
Legal values ensure that police conduct remains within the boundaries of the law
and the Constitution. These values include respect for human rights, due
process, equality before the law, and lawfulness in arrests or use of force.
Officers must carry out duties in a legally justifiable manner.
3. Cultural Values
Cultural values refer to an understanding and respect for the diverse traditions,
languages, and beliefs present in South African society. Police must be culturally
sensitive when dealing with communities to avoid discrimination or bias and
promote inclusive policing.
4. Professional Values
These values relate to how officers should conduct themselves within the
profession. Professionalism includes being disciplined, accountable, loyal to the
service, and committed to excellence. It also means maintaining a high standard
of behaviour on and off duty.
