Unit 12: Diseases and Infection
D: Understand how the human body responds to diseases and infections.
P5. Explain the components of the specific and the non-specific
defences, in protecting the body.
The Immune System
The immune system is a group of tissues, chemicals, and cells inside the body, and exclusively
designed to protect us from diseases or illnesses. And there are tow main parts of the immune
system: the specific and the non-specific immune systems. If the body successfully fights an
infection, it will respond more quickly and effectively if the same pathogen is re-encountered.
1- Non-specific immune system
Physical barriers
Physical barriers play a critical role in blocking microbes from reaching tissues that are
susceptible to infection. One of the body’s most important physical barriers is the skin
barrier, which is composed of three layers of closely packed cells.
The physical barriers are divided according to their location in the body into two parts: 1.
Skin: The thick layers of the skin prevent viruses, germs, and other pathogens from directly
entering the body and blood tissues, but the presence of open, untreated wounds and burns
may prevent this from being achieved. 2. The mucosa: It is a group of sheathed membranes
for the cavities of the digestive tubes and respiratory passages. These membranes impede
the entry of pathogens through these cavities into the body, by picking them up and sticking
them into the mucus and paralyzing their movement.
- The skin works hard to protect our bodies, but the external factors that are exposed
to it can affect its condition and weaken its natural defence. This may affect our
general health and become vulnerable
Skin is the first line of defence against harmful substances that we can be exposed either at
the workplace or at home where we use harsh cleaning products or inappropriate skin care
creams. The skin neutralizes aggressors such as bacteria, viruses and pollution and prevents
them from entering the body, and helps regulate body temperature, controls moisture
deficiency and maintains fluid balance. Also, distinguishes pain and warns us of danger. It
acts as a barrier and a shock absorber.
