Question 1: Life Skills Lesson Plan
1.1 Topic and Context
Topic: Understanding and Managing Emotions
Grade Level: Grade 4
Context and Relevance:
At the Grade 4 level, learners are typically between the ages of 9 and 10. This stage in
their development is characterized by increased cognitive maturity, greater social
awareness, and the emergence of more complex emotional experiences. Children begin
to navigate friendship dynamics, develop stronger peer connections, and face
challenges such as academic pressure or changes in their home environments.
Teaching the topic “Understanding and Managing Emotions” is essential for this age
group as it equips learners with the tools to recognize their emotions, articulate them
appropriately, and respond to others empathetically. Emotional competence is
foundational for self-regulation, conflict resolution, and mental well-being. If not
addressed, unmanaged emotions may manifest in behavioral issues, social withdrawal,
or academic underperformance. Therefore, embedding emotional literacy in the Life
Skills curriculum fosters not just personal development but also contributes to a positive
classroom environment and stronger interpersonal relationships.
1.2 Learning Objectives
1. Identify and name at least five core emotions (e.g., happiness, sadness,
anger, fear, and surprise) by observing facial expressions, body language, and
situational cues presented in pictures or stories.
2. Demonstrate appropriate emotional management strategies, such as
breathing exercises, counting to ten, or talking to a trusted adult, when faced with
emotionally challenging situations.
