Before studying this module and Unit 4 in particular, I had read
a few novels. One novel that stood out to me was “Purple
Hibiscus” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I appreciated its
emotionally rich characters and the political and family struggles
it portrayed in postcolonial Nigeria. The setting, which blended
tradition and change, gave the story depth. The character of
Kambili especially touched me because of her inner strength and
growth. On the other hand, I struggled to enjoy “Heart of
Darkness” by Joseph Conrad. Although it is considered a
classic, I found the writing style dense and difficult to follow.
The colonial attitudes in the novel also made it uncomfortable
for me to engage with.
In Unit 4 of the study guide (Tutorial Letter 501), I found the
discussion on narrative perspective and tone particularly
enlightening. I had never paid such close attention to how a
narrator's voice could shape the reader’s perception of events
and characters. I learned that the narrator in Small Things is not
simply an observer but someone who invites us into his inner
world with reflective, sometimes poetic, language. This
