C. According to the CDC, influenza is contagious, respiratory virus, that infects hosts
through the nose, throat, and lungs. Like many viruses, symptoms may include fever, chills,
nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, headache and lethargy. These symptoms can last
approximately a week. However, one can be contagious “one day before symptoms develop
and up to five to seven days after becoming sick,” (cdc.gov, 2024). The week of October 2 nd,
2022, in the U. S., the most recent flu outbreak began throughout regions A-J, each peaking by
mid-December. Here in Region A, the northeast, the flu peaked the week ending November 26th
of that year. According to the the CDC, by December 9th, 2022, Regions A-J accrued more
hospitalizations than the previous decade (cdc.gov).
C1. The main factors associated with influenza are, being under the age of five, over the
age of 65, and those with multiple comorbidities, such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.
The route of transmission of the virus is by droplets, when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks
in close proximity to others. One epidemiological determinant is related to climate. Regions
with colder seasons are especially at risk between the months of October to April each year,
(cdc.gov).
D. The community impact, here, is significant. Influenza spreads quickly, especially
through schools and elderly facilities. When children contract the virus at school they bring it
home to their families, who then bring it to their jobs. When elderly facilities are compromised
staff can contract the virus, also bringing it home to their families. This type of rapid spread
could cause another pandemic, putting more strain on local, smaller businesses, possibly
forcing them to
