Waiting period: None, although driver cannot be certified until treatment has been shown to be
adequate, effective, safe, and stableMaximum certification: recommendation is 1‐year
maximum due to
progressive nature of DM. If ME approves allowable 2‐year would need careful justification
Diabetes: DQ - ANS-Recommend not to certify if:
Severe hypoglycemia (1 in past 12 months or 2+ in past 5 years) defined as hypoglycemia with
seizure, LOC, need for assistance, impaired cognitive function
without warning until documentation from treating clinician
Loss of position sensation
Loss of pedal sensation
Resting tachycardia
Orthostatic hypotension
Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy, proliferative retinopathy,
DM exemption program - ANS-Applications no longer processed
Renewals no longer granted
Existing diabetes exemption holders to be certified under new standards upon next
renewal: FMCSA informing all exempted drivers
DM: Monitoring - ANS-Urinalysis: If shows glycosuria ME may elect to perform FS for random
BG Blood glucose:
HbA1c >10% indicator of poor glucose control. It is recommended that you obtain further
evaluation or monitor driver more frequently to determine disease interference with fitness for
duty/safety
Follow‐up: Must have biennial exams.
