lab Questions
1. Explain the digestion that occurs in the oral cavity.
The oral cavity is where digestion begins. The sublingual, paratoid, and submandible secrete
saliva into the oral galnd. The saliva helps in lubricating food during the chewing process,
protects the mouth from the pathogens, and initiates chemical digestion. The teeth
mechanically break down food through mastication. The pharynx receives frood from the
mouth after swallowing when the tongue forces food to the back of the mouth. Then the food
travels to the esophagus.
2. What is the function of the liver in digestion?
The function of the liver in digestion is to porcess the nutrients absorbed from the small
intestines. The liver also produces bile.
3. What role does the gall bladder play in digestion?
The gallbladder plays an important role in digestion by storing and concentrating bile, and then
releases it during digestion to help break down dietary fats.
4. Why is the orientation of muscle of the stomach wall important? How does this contribute to
its function?
The multi-directional muscle layers of the stomach wall are essential for mechanical digestion,
through mxing, and controlled movement of food through the digestive system. Without this
specific orientation, the stomach would not be able to break food down as effectively.
