According to “Called to care” a healing environment has been described as a holistic
approach to care that considers the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of a patient’s
well-being (Shelly & Miller, 2006). It also emphasizes the importance of empathy, compassion
and spiritual care during the healing process. It also shows how important holistic care is very
important when it comes to a patient’s healing process. Ivan’s illness has been characterized as
physical suffering and existential dread. Everyone around him had only focused on his physical
symptoms that they could see and neglected both his emotional and spiritual needs. In this all
there is a lack of the holistic approach of care which exacerbates Ivan’s suffering even more. As
he was being treated for his physical symptoms, his pain and discomfort continued. The doctors
were more focused on just giving a diagnosis and treating this illness but at the same time they
had failed to alleviate his suffering. Ivan’s family had ignored his emotional distress, and they
were more about their own personal discomfort and inconvenience. Not once did they even care
about his emotional well-being.
