Impact of the Problem on the Patient
Hospitalized patients are at an increased risk of device-related infections. One of the
more common devices utilized in hospitals is a urinary catheter. “Catheter-associated urinary
tract infection (CAUTI) is one of the most common nosocomial infections and associated with
various urinary tract complications, including minor complications such as catheter encrustation
and vesicolithiasis, to severe complications that threaten lives, such as pyelonephritis, urosepsis,
and septic shock.” (Siregar)
Impact of the Problem on the Organization
, When a patient acquires a CAUTI, the patient has the potential for longer hospitalization,
death, and care-associated costs. With these adverse possibilities, hospitals incur issues with
reimbursement and increased hospital stays, which in turn occupy more beds, causing a delay in
patient care for other patients.
Identify the PICO Components
P- pediatric patients with urinary catheters
I- utilizing CAUTI prevention bundles
C- not utilizing CAUTI prevention bundles
O- decreased CAUTIs throughout the organization
Evidence-Based Practice Question
In pediatric patients with urinary catheters, will utilizing CAUTI prevention bundles decrease the
incidence of CAUTIs through the organization compared to not using CAUTI prevention
bundles?
