Advanced Professional Nurse as Advocate
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2025) lists Domain 3 as “Population
Health”, and identifies competencies for the advanced professional nurse. One such
competency is “3.2 Engage in effective partnerships” (American Association of Colleges of
Nursing, 2025).This competency guides the professional nurse to seek out, lead, and manage
partnerships with stakeholders in order to improve the health of the population served. One
example of this competency is the advanced professional nurse, a director of an emergency
department, collaborating with mental health professionals, law enforcement, emergency
medical services, and other hospital administrators to lobby local government for additional
funding to provide mental health resources within the community. In this partnership, the
advanced professional nurse would seek out the relevant stakeholders and lead meetings and
collaboration, as well as evaluate progress of successes of the group.
Another competency identified is “3.4 Advance equitable population health policy”
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2025).This competency guides the professional
, nurse to advocate and contribute to policy change at all levels, be it within their organization, or
within any level of government. It also guides the advanced professional to assess and evaluate
the impacts, risks, and disparities within the policy. An example of this would be the emergency
department director mentioned above identifying the need for policy change within their
community regarding mental health patient treatment. The director would then join or form a
workgroup to develop a new policy regarding patient placement. The director would contribute
to the policy and evaluate how well the policy addresses the disparities as well as any risk it
creates for the mental health populations.
