DSM-5
Why create classifications of mental illness?
1. Guide treatment choices
2. Verbal shorthand for referring to a list of symptoms
3. Helps with research, because it gives you a definition of what counts as a mental illness
Critiques of diagnosing with the DSM
1. calls too many people “disordered”
2. border between diagnoses and normal is somewhat arbitrary, because you may need 3 symtpoms to get a diagnoses, even if you already have 2 really
strong
3. includes value judgements
