Introduction
The South African sugarcane industry, a vital contributor to the nation’s agricultural
economy, faces unique logistical challenges due to the perishable nature of sugarcane
and the seasonal dynamics of its production. This assignment explores the economic
benefits of warehousing for sugarcane farmers, emphasizing how strategic storage
solutions enhance supply chain efficiency, reduce costs, and stabilize market access.
Drawing on the case study of South Africa’s sugarcane operations, the discussion
highlights temporary field-side storage for raw cane and mill-based buffer systems that
mitigate perishability risks. Additionally, it evaluates customer service attributes—such
as reliability, timeliness, and quality adherence—critical for fostering trust between
farmers and sugar mills. The analysis further identifies the types of warehouses
employed, including private on-farm storage and bulk silos for processed sugar, and
examines semi-automated and automated material handling systems that optimize
throughput at mills and export terminals. By applying the six principles of material
handling—planning, standardization, work minimization, ergonomics, unit loads, and
systemic integration—this study underscores actionable strategies for improving
operational efficiency. Through these lenses, the assignment demonstrates how
integrated logistics and customer-centric practices can strengthen the sugarcane
supply chain, ensuring sustainability and competitiveness in a global market.
