Discuss their origins and key characteristics in the 19th century. 2. Case Studies: Compare how nationalism and industrialisation developed in at least two Western countries (e.g., Britain, Germany, France, or the United States). 3. Interconnections: How did industrialisation contribute to nationalist movements? Conversely, how did nationalism influence industrial policies? 4. HSY2601
ASSIGNMENT 3
DUE DATE: 24 APRIL 2025

, HSY2601 Themes in the 19
Century History: Power and the Western World
Section C: Assessment 3
DUE: 24 April 2025

In the 19th century, big changes happened in the Western world. Two of the most
important changes were nationalism and industrialisation. These changes made
countries stronger, changed how people lived and worked, and shaped the world we
live in today. Nationalism means people started to love their country more and wanted
to have their own government. Industrialisation means people used machines to make
goods, and many moved to cities to work in factories.
Nationalism made people feel proud of their culture and history. In some countries, it
helped people come together. But in other places, it caused problems because different
groups didn’t agree (Study Guide, Unit 3). Industrialisation started in Britain. New
machines helped people make things faster and cheaper. This made life different for
workers, women, and even children (Study Guide, Unit 4).
I will be discussing nationalism and industrialisation and how they are. Then it will
compare how these changes happened in Britain and Germany. It will also show how
industrialisation and nationalism were linked. And then we will talk about how these
changes affected normal people, like workers and women.

What is Nationalism and Industrialisation?
Nationalism means people started to feel part of one big group or country. They shared
the same language, culture, and history. In the 19th century, many people wanted their
own country. Some groups wanted freedom from big empires like the Austro-Hungarian
Empire (Study Guide, Unit 3). Nationalism helped create strong new countries like
Germany and Italy.

Industrialisation means using machines and factories to make goods instead of by
hand. This started in Britain around the 1780s. Before this, most people worked on
