Question 1.1: The Most Effective Hunting Method for the San People (15 Marks)
Between the use of bows and arrows and poisoning, the most effective hunting method
for the San people was the poisoning technique.
1. Increased Success Rate – Arrows without fletching often missed their target,
but poison ensured that even a non-lethal shot would eventually kill the animal.
2. Larger Game Hunting – Poison allowed the San to hunt larger animals like
buffalo and eland, which were difficult to kill with a single arrow shot.
3. Reduced Risk and Effort – Instead of engaging in prolonged chases or multiple
attempts to kill an animal, poisoning allowed hunters to track the prey until it
succumbed.
4. Efficient Use of Resources – The San used natural poisons from caterpillars,
beetle larvae, plants, and snake venom, showing their deep knowledge of their
environment.
5. Long-Standing Tradition – This method had been passed down for generations
and was highly refined.
Poisoning increased the likelihood of a successful hunt while minimizing wasted energy
and risk, making it the superior hunting method for the San.
