There may be evidence of hallucinations & delusional thinking. Psychosis can occur with or without the presences of organic impairment. Schizophrenia - Answer -- Disturbances in thought process, perception, & affect invariably result in a severe deterioration of social & occupational functioning. - About 1% of general population. - Symptoms appear in late adolescence or early adulthood (may occur in middle or late adult life). - Pattern of development occur in 4 phases. Schizophrenia Developmental Phases - Phase 1 - Answer -- The premorbid phase. - Social maladjustment so, social withdrawal, irritability, & antagonistic thoughts & behavior. - Being very shy & withdrawn, having poor peer relationships, doing poorly in school, & demonstration antisocial behavior. Schizophrenia Developmental Phases - Phase 2 - Answer -- The Prodromal Phase. - Begins with a change from premorbid functions & extends until onset of frank psychotic symptoms. - Can be as brief as a few weeks or months. - Average length of phase is 2 to 5 years. - Person experiences substantial functional impairment & nonspecific symptoms such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, poor concentration, fatigue, & behavioral deficits (deterioration in role functioning & social withdrawal),. - Perceptual abnormalities, ideas of reference, & suspiciousness develop late in phase. - Provides an opportunity for early intervention with a possibility for improvement in long term outcomes. - Current treatment suggest therapeutic interventions that offer support with identified problems, cognitive therapies to minimize functional impairment, family intervention to improve coping, & involvement with the schools to reduce the possibility of failure.Schizophrenia Developmental Phases - Phase 3 - Answer -- Schizophrenia Phase. - Active phase of the disorder. - Two or more of the followings - delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech (frequent derailment or incoherence), grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, negative symptoms (diminished emotional expression or abolition). - Level of functioning in one or more major areas (work), interpersonal relations, or self care is markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset. - Continuous signs persist for at least 6 months (must include at least
